About this Event
Center for Public Secrets presents Commentary on the Apocalypse: The Photography of Joseph Rushmore. Commentary on the Apocalypse is the solo debut exhibition from Tulsa-based photographer and documentarian Joseph Rushmore about how communities respond to white supremacist violence. The show compiles haunting front-line imagery captured at some of the most significant demonstrations in America. From May 28th, 2020 as the people of Minneapolis burned the MPD's Third Precinct– the workplace of the man who murdered George Floyd– through January 6th, 2021, where white supremacist mobs stormed the Capitol Building in an attempt to overthrow the presidential election, Rushmore's photos capture an important historical moment at human scale. In between, there are scenes from Tulsa, Portland, Salem, and Washington D.C. showing the national Black Lives Matter uprising alongside images of white supremacist rallies held in an effort to terrorize local populations. Shown at large-scale and spanning into the photography, sculptural, sound, and video spaces, this exhibit provides a physical and visual experience. Equally visceral, brutal, beautiful, and surreal, Rushmore's images capture a consequential moment in stunning detail.
