About the event

This Land Press and Tulsa-born artist Erin Turner are proud to host an event celebrating the launch of TOTEM: As Monument & Archive at the Center for Public Secrets on Saturday, May 30th, from 6-8 pm.

Totem: As Monument & Archive brings together restoration practice, community programming, critical scholarship, and visual documentation to interrogate how public art and monuments shape—and sometimes distort—historical narratives. Rooted in Turner’s long-term restoration of Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park in Foyil, Oklahoma, and the 2023 TOTEM lecture and workshop series, the book centers Indigenous voices, artists, historians, and community stakeholders to examine the entangled politics of representation, preservation, and tourism.

As Tulsa marks 100 years of Route 66, TOTEM: As Monument & Archive compels us to take a different view of our artistic and cultural landscape and to understand that the public art and landmarks that help define American culture are more than they seem.
